How to Make an "I Spy" Jar

This craft takes me back to the days I would pine over a new "I Spy" book; scanning each square inch of the page to find a silver thimble or three gold stars. This craft was a 4D version of this childhood nostalgia. This is a great puzzle to keep in your car or even in the classroom for all of those teachers out there! What's even better is that the kiddos get to decide what goes in their "I Spy" creation. I decided to make an ocean themed jar, which leads me right into my YouTube video...

This video is meant for you and your kiddo to watch together. Enjoy!

Don't forget to give videos you enjoy a thumbs up & subscribe!

MATERIALS:

  • A large & tall glass jar (I used a recycled pasta sauce jar)

  • "Filler" (sand, rice, flour, crushed shells)

  • Small toys or trinkets to "find"

  • Sticky label or name tag

  • Coffee filters (optional, but helpful as a makeshift funnel)

  • Super glue (optional; used to secure the lid to the jar so there aren' any sand disasters!)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Gather your materials. I purchased most of mine from Joann Fabrics (not sponsored...like at all. I just love that place!).

  2. Fill your jar with the small toys or trinkets you would like to FIND. As you add each item, keep a running list of what is in your jar.

  3. Fill your jar with your filler. Use your coffee filter (optional) to craft a makeshift funnel. This helps keep the mess to a minimum!

  4. Secure your lid with super glue (optional).

  5. Shake the jar until the small toys or trinkets are incorporated throughout the jar and mostly hidden by your filler.

  6. Copy your running list to your label or name tag. Then, stick your label to the side of your jar.

  7. Enjoy this puzzle you can continue to come back to time and time again!

TIPS, NOTES, AND EXTENSIONS:

  • You can make a themed jar or a completely random jar! Your "I Spy" creation could have tiny toys, marbles, buttons, a Lego, ANYTHING! The options are endless!

  • Put your toys/trinkets in BEORE your filler so that your jar doesn't overflow when you add your items.

  • This craft is perfect to make before a long car ride! If you're going on a vacation and have several miles ahead of you, I suggest making one of these before you hit the road. You could even make it MORE special by doing a theme that connects to your trip. (I'm thinking Disney, beach, mountain, Eiffel Tower, etc.)

I love that this is a version of "I Spy" that you can come back to time and time again. Finding all of the toys and trinkets you put in your jar will become a brand new mystery as soon as you give it a shake!

I hope you enjoyed making this craft as much as I did!

Thank you for reading!

Keep it crafty,

Miss Kelsey
